知床半島の冬

　　冬は本格的にやって来たのだ。雪と氷は知床(しれとこ)半島に生活する人々を箱詰(はこづ)めにし、一歩も歩けないように釘付けにする。番屋(ばんや)も部落も、港も、凡(すべ)てを氷結させてまったくの陸の孤島と化すのだ。ウトロ港と羅臼(らうす)港へ夏場の間だけ辛(かろ)うじて通っているバスも雪の訪れと共に途絶(とだ)えてしまう。半島一の繁華な部落といわれる羅臼でさえそうなのだ。突端(とっぱな)に近く、歩こうにも径(みち)もない彦市(ひこいち)老人の番屋などは海も山もびっしりと氷結してしまって、初夏の太陽が再び船の運航(うんこう)を許(ゆる)してくれるまではどうしようもないのだ。
